About Coatings

NORSOK coatings are high-performance anti-corrosion coatings that are widely used in offshore and oil and gas industries. NORSOK is a Norwegian Oil and Gas Standard, a body that aims to develop and adopt cost-effective technical standards that meet the safety, quality, and environmental goals in the Norwegian oil and gas industry.

The coatings are designed to protect metal surfaces and structures in harsh offshore and marine environments where corrosion is a significant problem. They offer superior protection against saltwater, UV radiation, and corrosion mechanisms such as oxidation, hydrogen cracking, and chloride attack.

One essential feature of NORSOK coatings is their ability to maintain their performance even in extreme temperatures, from -50°C to +180°c. This is necessary for offshore, oil and gas, and petrochemical industries where high-temperature corrosion is a common problem, and corrosion can have severe consequences on equipment failure, environmental damage, and human safety risks.

The coatings meet rigorous international standards, including ISO 12944-5, ISO 20340:2009, NORSOK M-501 System 1, and SSPC-Paint 15, and SSPC-PA 2. They have passed stringent corrosion tests, including salt spray, cyclic testing, seawater immersion, and cathodic disbondment tests.

NORSOK coatings are categorised into different types according to their application areas, including type M, type S, type Z, and Type systems. Each type has specific features that meet the required performance standards for different environments.

Type M coatings are designed for marine use and can withstand severe impact, abrasion, and fouling. Type S coatings are for structural steel and provide excellent adhesion, durability, and corrosion protection. Type Z coatings are for pipelines and offer high-temperature resistance and adherence to the uneven pipeline surface. NORSOK type systems provide a comprehensive range of coatings suitable for a wide range of application areas.

The benefits of NORSOK coatings include extended equipment life, reduced downtime, improved safety, and increased operational efficiency. They are also suitable for new constructions and repainting projects.

What Standards do NORSOK Coatings meet?

NORSOK coatings meet several international standards for high-performance anti-corrosion coatings, including:

  1. ISO 12944-5: 2018: Part 5 outlines the types of paint systems and surfaces intended for corrosion protection in offshore environments.
  2. ISO 20340: 2009: The standard gives requirements for repainting substrates with paint and defines which paint system or thermosetting coating that can be used in environmental conditions encountered in offshore operations.
  3. NORSOK M-501 System 1: The standard is specific to the North Sea offshore environment and details offshore structural steelwork finish and paint systems’ performance requirements.
  4. SSPC-Paint 15 and SSPC-PA 2: The standards give guidelines for establishing procedures for coating work in steel structures that have been rehabbed or preserved.

These standards ensure that NORSOK coatings offer high-performance corrosion protection in harsh offshore and marine environments. The coatings have passed stringent corrosion tests, including salt spray, cyclic testing, seawater immersion and cathodic disbandment tests. The rigorous testing has led process plants, offshore installations owners, and survivability professionals to view NORSOK coatings as a reliable, long-lasting, and cost-effective anti-corrosion solution.

In conclusion, NORSOK coatings have become an essential aspect of corrosion protection for the offshore and oil and gas industries globally. The coatings’ superior performance and ability to meet the demanding standards required in harsh environments have earned them recognition as a reliable, cost-effective, and long-lasting corrosion protection solution.
